Ficus carica - Common Fig

Ficus carica, better known as the common fig, is a deciduous, large shrub or small spreading tree with a rounded crown. This specimen can deal with almost all soil types but develops considerably slower in poor or rocky soil.

Native to the Mediterranean and western Asia, the fig tree has been cultivated since ancient times with over 850 species. Now it is grown throughout the world, both for its fruit and as an ornamental plant and has been grown in the UK since the early 1600’s.

Being in a warm, sunny location is a necessity. How-ever, if this isn't possible, being planted near a wall can add much needed protection. If planted in a container, it will naturally restrict the roots which helps to control the size and improves fruiting. This means it is perfect for courtyards or container gardens.

FACT: For a mature Ficus carica, it can produce over 100kg of figs in a single year.
That is the same weight as an average Giant Panda!
